About the Author
This is my first-ever digital project; it began as a final project for a class I was taking in Digital Humanities, but it has already outlived the end of that class. Working digitally is a departure for someone like me who is much more accustomed to traditional print publishing. I have written books and articles about American racial history, historical memory of the civil rights movement, and even the musical, Hamilton, but working in this form has forced me to think deeply about how to best structure my argument, what materials to use to emphasize different points, and how the digital allows for a layering of argument and evidence. But most of all, it has made me think more deeply about audience. I hope that this project will be accessible and useful to residents of Knox County. I know that this is a topic of great local interest. In 2020, I participated in a local panel on the history of blackface that drew a crowd of over ninety Knox residents. This project seeks to make the kinds of evidence and interpretation I presented on that panel available to a much wider group.
