Whitewashing Blackface and Whistling Dixie : The Commemoration of Dan Emmett

Bibliographic citation, Emmett house as shrine

In 1994, a chapter of the Mount Vernon Questers requested funds from the National Questers Organization to help pay for moving and restoring the Dan Emmett birthplace home. The house had been transferred to the Knox County Historical Society by the city in August 1993, and now members of the historical society were hoping to raise funds to move the house to the location of the Knox County Historical Museum (997 Harcourt Rd.) so it could be preserved and restored. A letter sent to the Questers organization included a one-page handwritten explanation of the significance of Emmett and his home. The document notes that the structure was originally leased by the city to the historical society "so it could be used as a museum and shrine" to Emmett."
