When the Knox County commissioners proposed a 3% bed tax on all public accommodations to help fund tourism promotions, one local hotel owner balked. Mount Vernon, he insisted, "was not a tourist attraction...We do not have anything to draw people and keep them here. What are we going to do,...show them Dan Emmett's house? There has to be a limit."
