Whitewashing Blackface and Whistling Dixie : The Commemoration of Dan Emmett

Mary Darby Fitzhugh and the Daughters of the Confederacy

Mary Darby Fitzhugh does not appear to be a leader within the United Daughters of the Confederacy, but there is evidence that she was an active member of the group. In 1917, the president of the Lexington, Kentucky chapter of the United Daughter of the Confederacy sent Fitzhugh a letter expressing regret that Fitzhugh had to withdraw from the chapter and declaring her a member in good standing. [J.E. Cassidy to Mary Darby Fitzhugh, February 22, 1917. Mary Darby Richardson Fitzhugh Papers (Mss. A F557 1), The Filson Historical Society, Louisville, KY.] In 1935, Fitzhugh gave a speech to the Cincinnati chapter of the UDC about Dan Emmett and the memorial project.
