Whitewashing Blackface and Whistling Dixie : The Commemoration of Dan Emmett

Renee Romano, Facebook Posting to Ohio 7 Watch, August 16, 2017

As I have been watching with horror the actions of white supremacists in Charlottesville, motivated in part by their anger at efforts to remove Confederate monuments, I've become even more appalled than I was when I first moved to Knox County that the big festival in Mount Vernon is named after Dan Emmett, a white minstrel performer best known for writing the song "Dixie," (or for stealing that song from a black performing troupe). I talked with a few people at the rally in solidarity with Charlottesville who expressed similar concerns. Would anyone be interested in joining us in exploring how we might challenge our own racist commemorations right in our own backyard? Feel free to private message if you are--I plan to start by reading Howard and Judy Sacks's book about Dan Emmett and doing more research into the history of the Dan Emmett Festival.
